Hollie Richardson a V stitch means you crochet 2 double crochet into the same stitch. They usually have one chain in the middle but it all depends on what the pattern/graph calls for.
I started making it and the circle started to crinkle. Did that happen to everyone else. It would not stay flat. I need a more instructive instruction.
I think it's for a 4 year old, I'm going to have a go with some double knitting and a 4 / 4.5 / 5mm hook, depending how it goes. I'm hoping it will fit a 2 year old - wish me luck!
I really want to make this for a size 7/8 girl. does anyone have any ideas on how to adjust this pattern to fit a larger girl? My granddaughter just fell in love with some yarn we found and she wanted this pattern but if it can't be enlarged I guess we'll have to look elsewhere but this looks pretty simple. I'm used to making afghans and have never made a piece of clothing so I really can't go too elaborate.
Hey guys i know that the comments are mostly older but i am trying this for a little girl in size 6 cloths. I am increasing the size by repeating the 6th and 7th row until i reach a good size. you can also increase the size by using a larger hook i might try I or J depending on the size wanted that way you wouldnt have to use so many extra rows. I do think that the purple marks are dc and the yellow are tc hence the color change. If anyone has the ability to get a larger copy of the pattern i would appreciate a copy or link.

Im confused with the arm/sleeves.i have the arm spots. Im going on to the next row. But do i skip where sleeves go? Are they to be stuched as one pice? Help
I must say the Google translation is hilarious. District? 14 minutes? Tbsp?!?! On a real note, does this actually make a size 3 or 4T? Also what does a number 5 hook translate to...G,H, I? Beth T, I apologize sincerely. My 2 year old granddaughter stays with me 4 to 5 days a week so I stay pretty busy. It just so happened that just as I used Google translation I had to go running after her so I posted it without reading it first, trusting Google did it correctly...WRONG! I am going to try to work it out by the graph in the next couple of days and will post it on here. I will tell you this though, here is a link you can go to to convert UK hook #'s into US hook letters http://www.purplekittyyarns.com/info/crochet-hook-conversion.html and the # 5 UK hook is a US I hook. Sure hope this helps a bit.
It says fine so in US standards that would be fingering and the yarn is 150 grams which would convert to 5.2911 ounces so I would get 6 ounces of fingering weight yarn. Still, in my mind's eye I don't see 6 oz of fingering weight yarn being enough. I would make sure I use a yarn that doesn't have a die lot that way you can easily get more to finish it.
I just saw this adorable pattern on FB last night. I found what looks to be the adult pattern on Drops/Garn studios website (well actually my hubby did). It is called Moonlight Mist. But this is only the adult size, so would love to have a child's version. I have a few granddaughters that this would look adorable on!
Update- After I started really looking at the 3 pictures that were in the post I saw, they are 3 DIFFERENT patterns. There is one very similar to this for sale at Mary Maxim. I now have the patterns for all 3! YAY

the instructions listed above do not correspond to the chart. If you want to make one like the chart, here is the English US version of the instructions. I made this for my granddaughter who wears a 2 and it is great! You can adjust your yarn size and needle size to get different sizes. You can also add extra rounds of increases following the pattern of the increases. ENJOY!

Msr2, you say your work is crinkling.. you may have too small a hook in relation to the weight of yarn you are using..try some other combinations, and maybe make your initial circle a little looser.
Deb-The shrug being discussed in this thread is ONLY the one with 12 rows. The other shrug is a purchased pattern from Mary Maxim. (I posted the link above)
this is going to be a stupid question, and I apologize up front. But the pattern has a sleeve opening of 17 stitches. This means there's a 34 stitch opening. But the sleeve is only a 23 count chain. No mention is made of how to attach said sleeve, but most importantly, how am to fit a 23 stitch count sleeve into a 34 count opening?
No stupid questions Rhonda. When you do round 10, it changes the 17 chains into 10 stitches. (Rnd 10 Repeat row 8. At the chain spaces….*skip 2 chains, 2 dc in next ch* for a total of 5 times. (5 clusters of 2dc in armhole ch space.) You have only skipped 12 stitches when you made the ch 17 so that leaves 22 stitches for the sleeve. The extra 2 stitches are added back in where the rows meet at the top and bottom of the sleeve. Otherwise, there is quite a gap. I wish we could do diagrams in here. :-( Bottom line, you attach your yarn either at the bottom or top of the sleeve on the right side and make as many rows for the sleeve as you want. (I started one sleeve in the top and one in the bottom so that the joins would be in the back of the sleeve) I made 17 rows for the small size. Does that help?
I'm having a hard time with the selves part. When I keep going it keeps getting bigger like into a flair. How do I make it that its doesn't make it a flair? Can someone please help me out.
Most likely you are adding a stitch when you do your join. I would suggest ripping back to the beginning and then place a stitch marker in your first stitch. Then you know where your clip stitch should go to join the row. Stitch count should remain constant at 24. The ch 3 at the beginning of each row counts as your 1st dc. Does this help?

Yes and no. they are made after the sweater. But you join your yarn to the sweater to make the sleeves. It is a 2 row pattern repeat as seen in the chart. The stitch count is consistent at 24 stitches. There are NO ch 1's in the sleeves.

One person has the pattern in doubles & another translated it in triples. What size is this pattern for? Mine is very tiny! Would fit a baby. I have ripped it out & restarted about 4 times! I used the pattern using mostly doubles. Has anyone actually finished this & what size did you end up with? I need it to fit a 3 yr. old.
Janice-The chart is written with dc with a couple of rows of trc near the last rows. In order to make one larger for my 3 yo granddaughter, I used a chunky weight yarn and a J hook. I have made 3 and the ones made with baby yarn and an H hook are more 1 yo size. You just have to play with it. If you want to make it bigger with the baby yarn, you would just add more increase rows.

That is a great question Andrea! When I made the one for my 3 y.o. I did not increase the armholes because I did not use any more increase rounds. I think that if your goal is a size much larger than for a 3 y.o. it would be wise to increase the armholes accordingly. There are 12 rows total with the 17 ch size so for each increase round you may want to add at least 2 more chains. If you do increases, you will also have to adjust the number of stitches before the next armhole. There are fewer stitches at the "top" of the shrug so you would need to figure out how many stitches you want after the first set of chains to keep the same ratio. Does that help?

So have re read all your comments and decided that the version I have just finished done on a 5mm hook with dk no increases is about as large I can go with dk as you suggested further up the thread I will up size to possibly aran or chunky to see how that works !! I dont have any children to make this for have sons / grandsons!! But have a friend who has a 3 yo g/ daughter this is a surprise - sizing is very difficult when your working blind!! I have also done a version without sleeves that looks quite good too once again many thanks

What is the origin of this pattern? The symbol for a double crochet or triple crochet is the same but means different in US vs UK and obviously with change the size...those that had success used a triple crochet??

Pam, no, you attach the sleeves to the shell as you go. Crochet around the space that you left for the sleeves. there should be 24 stitches after you have stitched around the hole created when you did the shell. does that help? Carol

I started making it and the circle started to crinkle. Did that happen to everyone else. It would not stay flat. I need a more instructive instruction.
What size is it supposed to be?
I think it's for a 4 year old, I'm going to have a go with some double knitting and a 4 / 4.5 / 5mm hook, depending how it goes. I'm hoping it will fit a 2 year old - wish me luck!
I really want to make this for a size 7/8 girl. does anyone have any ideas on how to adjust this pattern to fit a larger girl? My granddaughter just fell in love with some yarn we found and she wanted this pattern but if it can't be enlarged I guess we'll have to look elsewhere but this looks pretty simple. I'm used to making afghans and have never made a piece of clothing so I really can't go too elaborate.

Hey guys i know that the comments are mostly older but i am trying this for a little girl in size 6 cloths. I am increasing the size by repeating the 6th and 7th row until i reach a good size. you can also increase the size by using a larger hook i might try I or J depending on the size wanted that way you wouldnt have to use so many extra rows. I do think that the purple marks are dc and the yellow are tc hence the color change. If anyone has the ability to get a larger copy of the pattern i would appreciate a copy or link.

It just so happened that just as I used Google translation I had to go running after her so I posted it without reading it first, trusting Google did it correctly...WRONG! I am going to try to work it out by the graph in the next couple of days and will post it on here. It says fine so in US standards that would be fingering and the yarn is 150 grams which would convert to 5.2911 ounces so I would get 6 ounces of fingering weight yarn. Still, in my mind's eye I don't see 6 oz of fingering weight yarn being enough. I would make sure I use a yarn that doesn't have a die lot that way you can easily get more to finish it.
I just saw this adorable pattern on FB last night. I found what looks to be the adult pattern on Drops/Garn studios website (well actually my hubby did). It is called Moonlight Mist. But this is only the adult size, so would love to have a child's version. I have a few granddaughters that this would look adorable on!
Update- After I started really looking at the 3 pictures that were in the post I saw, they are 3 DIFFERENT patterns. There is one very similar to this for sale at Mary Maxim. I now have the patterns for all 3! YAY

the instructions listed above do not correspond to the chart. If you want to make one like the chart, here is the English US version of the instructions. I made this for my granddaughter who wears a 2 and it is great! You can adjust your yarn size and needle size to get different sizes. You can also add extra rounds of increases following the pattern of the increases. ENJOY!
Toddler Crochet Circle Shrug-
Original pattern was on Russian site with only the chart.
Here are the directions in English, US terminology
Notes: ~Ch 3 at beginning of each round counts as dc
~Join each round with slip stitch in beg ch 3 unless otherwise noted.
~I used baby sport yarn with an I hook and my circle was 16” in diameter, including the border. I used a total of 17 rows for the sleeves. Fits my almost 3 year old granddaughter great. (she is still wearing size 2)
Rnd 1- Use either the magic circle or ch 5 and sl stitch into a loop. Ch 3, 15 dc in circle. (16 dc)

Msr2, you say your work is crinkling.. you may have too small a hook in relation to the weight of yarn you are using..try some other combinations, and maybe make your initial circle a little looser.

Deb-The shrug being discussed in this thread is ONLY the one with 12 rows. The other shrug is a purchased pattern from Mary Maxim. (I posted the link above)
this is going to be a stupid question, and I apologize up front. But the pattern has a sleeve opening of 17 stitches. This means there's a 34 stitch opening. But the sleeve is only a 23 count chain. No mention is made of how to attach said sleeve, but most importantly, how am to fit a 23 stitch count sleeve into a 34 count opening?
No stupid questions Rhonda. When you do round 10, it changes the 17 chains into 10 stitches. (Rnd 10 Repeat row 8. At the chain spaces….*skip 2 chains, 2 dc in next ch* for a total of 5 times. (5 clusters of 2dc in armhole ch space.) You have only skipped 12 stitches when you made the ch 17 so that leaves 22 stitches for the sleeve. The extra 2 stitches are added back in where the rows meet at the top and bottom of the sleeve. Otherwise, there is quite a gap. I wish we could do diagrams in here. :-( Bottom line, you attach your yarn either at the bottom or top of the sleeve on the right side and make as many rows for the sleeve as you want. (I started one sleeve in the top and one in the bottom so that the joins would be in the back of the sleeve) I made 17 rows for the small size. Does that help?
I'm having a hard time with the selves part. When I keep going it keeps getting bigger like into a flair. How do I make it that its doesn't make it a flair? Can someone please help me out.
Most likely you are adding a stitch when you do your join. I would suggest ripping back to the beginning and then place a stitch marker in your first stitch. Then you know where your clip stitch should go to join the row. Stitch count should remain constant at 24. The ch 3 at the beginning of each row counts as your 1st dc. Does this help?

The pattern that calls for the dc, ch 1 is not the same as the chart pattern. My post above follows the chart.
So the sleeves are made seperate and attached after?
Yes and no. they are made after the sweater. But you join your yarn to the sweater to make the sleeves. It is a 2 row pattern repeat as seen in the chart. The stitch count is consistent at 24 stitches. There are NO ch 1's in the sleeves.

One person has the pattern in doubles & another translated it in triples. What size is this pattern for? Mine is very tiny! Would fit a baby. I have ripped it out & restarted about 4 times! I used the pattern using mostly doubles. Has anyone actually finished this & what size did you end up with? I need it to fit a 3 yr. old.
Janice-The chart is written with dc with a couple of rows of trc near the last rows. In order to make one larger for my 3 yo granddaughter, I used a chunky weight yarn and a J hook. I have made 3 and the ones made with baby yarn and an H hook are more 1 yo size. You just have to play with it. If you want to make it bigger with the baby yarn, you would just add more increase rows.

That is a great question Andrea! When I made the one for my 3 y.o. I did not increase the armholes because I did not use any more increase rounds. I think that if your goal is a size much larger than for a 3 y.o. it would be wise to increase the armholes accordingly. There are 12 rows total with the 17 ch size so for each increase round you may want to add at least 2 more chains. If you do increases, you will also have to adjust the number of stitches before the next armhole. There are fewer stitches at the "top" of the shrug so you would need to figure out how many stitches you want after the first set of chains to keep the same ratio. Does that help?
Thank you Carol for getting back to me so quickly - i am not that brill at working out where I would place the increases but am a seasoned crochet lady!! So have re read all your comments and decided that the version I have just finished done on a 5mm hook with dk no increases is about as large I can go with dk as you suggested further up the thread I will up size to possibly aran or chunky to see how that works !! I dont have any children to make this for have sons / grandsons!! But have a friend who has a 3 yo g/ daughter this is a surprise - sizing is very difficult when your working blind!! I have also done a version without sleeves that looks quite good too once again many thanks

What is the origin of this pattern? The symbol for a double crochet or triple crochet is the same but means different in US vs UK and obviously with change the size...those that had success used a triple crochet??

Pam, no, you attach the sleeves to the shell as you go. Crochet around the space that you left for the sleeves. there should be 24 stitches after you have stitched around the hole created when you did the shell. does that help? Carol
